Dynamic warm-ups and strength training reduce injury risk; static stretching mostly reduces power.

Where the myth comes from

Generations of school PE and team warm-ups opened with held stretches, on the logic that a 'looser' muscle is harder to tear. Habit hardened into doctrine long before the trials were run.

What the research actually shows

Behm and colleagues reviewed the acute effects of stretching across a large body of studies. Static stretching held longer than about 60 seconds per muscle reliably reduced strength, power and sprint performance, with smaller effects at shorter durations. Injury-incidence data showed no clear protective benefit in healthy active people.

What does reduce injury risk

Progressive strength training is the standout: injury-prevention reviews find large reductions in acute and overuse injuries from resistance training. Eccentric work for hamstrings, gradual load progression, adequate sleep and a warm-up that raises tissue temperature and rehearses the movement all beat passive stretching.

Where stretching still belongs

Static stretching genuinely improves range of motion when done regularly, and it's fine after training or in a separate session — especially if a sport demands extreme positions. Training strength through a full range of motion delivers much of the same mobility benefit while also building tissue.
