What's true

is similar across 5–30 reps taken near failure; 'tone' is a body-fat outcome.

TL;DR

Across 21 studies, light loads and heavy loads produced similar when sets were taken close to failure. Heavy loads were clearly better for maximal strength.

Where the myth comes from

Physique magazines split training into 'bulking' (heavy, low reps) and 'toning' (light, high reps). The vocabulary stuck even though no physiological mechanism supports a rep range that firms muscle without growing it.

What the research actually shows

Schoenfeld's meta-analysis compared loads under about 60% of with loads above that. was statistically similar between conditions provided sets were taken near muscular failure. Strength gains, by contrast, favoured heavy loads substantially — strength is specific to the load you practise.

What 'tone' really describes

The toned appearance is a developed muscle sitting under a low enough layer of body fat to show its outline, plus normal resting muscle tension. High-rep sets with a weight that never approaches failure change neither of those things — they mostly just burn a small amount of energy.

How to programme it

Use 5–8 reps on the main to build strength, 8–15 for most accessory volume, and 15–30 for movements where heavy loading is awkward or joint-unfriendly. What all of them require is proximity to failure — roughly zero to three reps left in reserve.

Pick the rep range that suits the exercise, take sets close to failure, and let diet handle the body fat that determines definition.
