Same diet, same weight loss — but the composition flips.
If you're in a , sleep decides whether the weight you lose is fat or hard-won muscle.

What the study found
Nedeltcheva ran a randomised crossover trial: overweight adults did the same 14-day -restricted diet twice, once on 8.5 hours of sleep and once on 5.5. Both conditions produced the same total weight loss. But on short sleep, most of the loss came from ; on long sleep, most came from fat.
Why it matters for you
Short sleep raises , tanks and lifts — a hormonal environment that spares fat and burns muscle. It also crushes training performance, cutting the very stimulus that protects .
How to apply it
Treat 7 hours as a floor during a cut. Anchor a consistent wake time, kill screens 30 minutes before bed, keep the bedroom cool and dark. If you can only fix one health lever this month and you're dieting, fix sleep.
Caveats
The study was small (10 participants) but the is huge and the mechanism is well-supported by dozens of parallel studies on hormones and appetite.
